ActivMission

A way to discover and connect new Activision games and gamers

Hackathon | Adobe Creative Jams - Activision

Position | UX Researcher / UI Designer

Duration | 3 Days

Tools | Adobe XD, Illustrator

Background

Adobe Creative Jams is an event where teams from all over the world compete in a tournament that puts our creative skills to the test using Adobe Creative Cloud apps.

Problem

How can we increase the awareness of Activision games in youth and create a platform where players can interact, talk about their favourite games and simply create an Activision community??

Outcome

A app that encourages gamers to not only learn and see upcoming Activision games but connect with each other through forums and sharing fan-art.

User Research

My teammate Jacquelyn and I began our research with identifying our target market. As guided by the Adobe Creative Jams problem brief, we are to focus on new gamers and their age-appropriateness and skills (youth vs young adult new gamers).

User Interviews

To begin the process in creating the solution, we determined key aspects to implement in the mobile app as guided by the following problem statements.

Personas

Meet Minna and her mother Kora, our main personas for the purpose of this design challenge.

Problem Analysis

Create a proficiency-focused app experience to inform new gamers about video games based on age- appropriateness and skills such as read-ing, hand-eye coordination, fitness, personal account-ability, multi-tasking, problem-solving, memory, attention, concentration, social skills and more.

Design Process

Visual Identity

In order to create an interactive gaming-community platform the app itself must have an eye-capturing design that suggests “adventure into another world”; it should be welcoming and easy to navigate for all levels of gamers while utilizing Activision's established brand.

Wireframes

As the UX/UI designer I first began designing low-fidelity wireframes prior to finalizing the high-fidelity prototypes

Feedback + Iterations + Testing

Using the feedback received from minor user-testing and from my teammate, I thought about how else can we make this app as fun and interactive as when people first begin to play a video game?

Gamified Onboarding

We decided to create a gamified onboarding guide where first-time users of the app feel as if they are playing a game when being introduced to the app.

The Solution

After receiving feedback and iterating my wireframes, I moved on to creating the high fidelity designs and revisited my problem statements and guiding questions.

Interact with It!

Play around with the prototype however you want. Experience and explore the fun ActivMission app.

Reflection

Keep in mind the audience you are creating this digital solution for. When designing the app, our scope began to widen as we expanded the mobile app’s characteristics and capabilities. Before our finalized solutions, we ended up creating a more young-adult appropriate platform instead of a platform for young new gamers. It’s very important to not forget the audience we are designing a solution for.
