Capture memories & share your AirBnB travel experiences

Hackathon | Adobe Creative Jams - AirBnB

Position | UX Researcher / UI Designer

Duration | 3 Days

Tools | Adobe XD, Illustrator

Background

Adobe Creative Jams is an event where teams from all over the world compete in a tournament that puts our creative skills to the test using Adobe Creative Cloud apps.

Problem

How can we enable individuals to share their travel experiences through AirBnB?

Outcome

A travel experiences section integrated in the existing AirBnB app for individuals to share their recent AirBnB travels, capturing and sharing travel memories.

User Research

My teammate Jacquelyn and I began our research with identifying our target market. As guided by the Adobe Creative Jams problem brief, we concluded that our focus is for individuals who are free spirited, travelers and adventurers!

User Interviews

To begin the process in creating the solution, we determined key users and aspects to implement in the mobile app as guided by the following problem statements.

Personas

Meet Zeke, our main persona for the purpose of this design challenge.

Problem Analysis

Empower families and groups of friends who travel together in a collaborative way to document, organize, and share their travel experiences and stays to the larger Airbnb community. In a mobile app, provide a way to combine photos and/or notes and transform their shared family trips into immersive stories about the culture and destinations they visit.

Design Process

Visual Identity

In order to create an interactive travel-community platform the app itself must have an eye-capturing design that gives off a “fun” and “going on an adventure” vibe when first seen. Utilizing AirBnB’s established colour palette and simple yet captivating copy-writing.

Wireframes

As the UX/UI designer I first began designing low-fidelity wireframes prior to finalizing the high-fidelity prototypes

Feedback + Iterations + Testing

Using the feedback received from minor user-testing and from my teammate, I thought about how we can create more freedom and creativity when interacting with the travel experiences section of the app. How can we create a platform for individuals to share their travel experiences that is familiar and natural for the users?

Inspired by Social Media

Social media applications such as Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook paved the way of sharing experiences through photos, videos and stories. My teammate and I got inspiration from those apps in order to create that natrual "sharing" workflow and process (from capturing the content, creating the caption and editing the photo etc.) for when they do share their AirBnB travel experiences.

The Solution

After receiving feedback and iterating my wireframes, I moved on to creating the high fidelity designs and revisited my problem statements and guiding questions.

Reflection

Collaboration and understanding our users creates the greatest outcome. We participated in this design challenge as the pandemic was at its peak, our dream of travelling like we used to before helped us understand the idea behind our solution, as are not only users of the AirBnB app but we also love to travel!

Out of 900 teams that participated globally, we ranked within the Top 30 (22nd) as our solution truly solved the problem brief while creating an aesthetically pleasing UI design.
